VOLUNTEERING

Volunteers are the heart of CORA's operations. Last year volunteers contributed more than 3,700 hours. As the number of hungry families grows, so does our need for more volunteers. Close to 200 women and men are currently involved in nearly every aspect of CORA's operations.

Volunteers participate in many ways including:

  • serving families who come to the Pantry needing food
  • picking up and delivering food to the pantry
  • checking in food  donations
  • helping with administrative tasks
  • serving as members of the CORA Food Drive Team
  • representing CORA at our booth at community outreach events such as Goldston Old Fashion Days, Pittsboro Street Fair, Chamber Business Expo, Fearrington's Don Davis Storytelling event

  • annual Chatham Hunger Walk held  every November
  • conducting Food Drives in neighborhoods, civic and church groups

We greatly appreciate people with larger capacity vehicles who can help with transport of food drive collections or groceries from the Durham Food Bank or local providers.

If you would like to join our Volunteer Program, please call or email us.  We’ll connect you with our volunteer coordinator, Hilary Murray, who will register you for our New Volunteers Orientation held the fourth Wednesday of each month (no orientation in December).  You will receive a tour, find out how things work, and depending on your volunteer interests be assigned your first shift with a seasoned volunteer.  People make CORA what it is, and we can never have too many helping hands.

If you are 18 years old or younger and are looking for ways to volunteer and/or need community service hours for school or scouts, we have the following suggestions:

  • Sponsor a food drive in your school or community
  • Gather items for our Birthday Closet or Reading Corner/Play Area
  • Put together a walking team for our Annual Hunger Walk
  • Help serve soup at the Annual Empty Bowls Event
  • Help out at a S.N.A.C.K. (Summer Nutritional Assistance for Chatham Kids) distribution site
  • Start a community garden
Volunteering after Pantry hours and on weekends are unfortunately extremely limited, but you can do most of these activities anytime and still make a difference in your community and help a family in need.

If you are interested in any of the above activities, please contact Lyndie Bracey at 542-5020 or pantrymgr@corafoodpantry.org or Beth Budd at 545-3030 or execdirector@corafoodpantry.org
