In our community, many seniors live on a fixed income or paycheck to paycheck, struggling to afford enough nutritious food for themselves. With rising prices in grocery stores, it has become even more challenging for them to make ends meet. Currently, seniors make up 15% of the people that CORA serves. We’ve observed that older adults are often forced to make difficult choices, such as choosing between medication or groceries, and the increasing cost of necessities only exacerbates these trade-offs.
Fortunately, we have a delivery program to assist homebound seniors who cannot come to CORA. Every month, we deliver food to approximately 45 older adults across Chatham County, which helps to alleviate stress and anxiety when struggling to afford or access food. Additionally, we hope that providing food assistance to older adults allows them to stay independent and age in place, as adequate nutrition is essential for maintaining physical strength and cognitive function. At CORA, we believe that delivering food to hungry seniors is a compassionate and necessary intervention in helping many in our community lead dignified and fulfilling lives.
